Who has been your mentor?

I ran across these photos the other day and they’ve sent me scurrying down memory lane. Right around 31 years ago, I was preparing to go to my first Sigafoose Gathering. I say preparing, but mostly I was freaking out. I’d heard Jim Sigafoose speak many times before at Parker Seminars, and he simultaneously inspired me and scared me schmootz-less.

Because of his stage persona and what he had achieved in practice, he seemed so lofty, so magical, so unreachable. And even after a few years of attending the Gathering four times a year, we only had occasional, brief and awkward conversations, and he only knew me as “Tahoe.”

It was my daughter, Ari, who finally broke the ice, and helped begin a friendship between us all that lasted another nearly 20 years, until his passing. These photos may very well mark the actual moment, and so they are incredibly special to me.

Thank you, Sig for being the most influential person in my life, other than Hillary. And thank you, Ari for being the most beautiful icebreaker and heart-melter I’ve ever known.

Who has been your mentor, your tour guide in the journey from head to heart?
